One of the elements of buying artificial turf is deciding whether you want or need infill. Manufactured using sand or crumb rubber particles, infill is the material placed between the blades of an artificial grass lawn in order to help the blades stand up and appear more lifelike. Infill is also used to simulate natural soil when walked on, offering a soft and forgiving foundation. However, the decision on whether you need infill depends on the application. In other words, there are cases that require infill and there are cases that do not.
Say yes to infill if you’re installing an artificial grass lawn for athletic applications, commercial playground structures, dog exercise runs, and high traffic areas. And depending on the type of product you purchase, the turf may already come with rubber infill. For example, our ProPlay-Plus Series, used for playgrounds, comes with up to two pounds of rubber infill per square foot, saving you hundreds of dollars.
Say no to infill if you’re creating an outdoor bathroom for your pet. You will also want to avoid infill if you’re installing artificial residential turf for aesthetic looks, steep hills or slopes, and balconies, decks, and patio areas. In addition, you can avoid using infill if the area of the project is 500 square feet or smaller. While the ultimate decision is up to the buyer, we recommend discussing it with an expert before final purchase.
