An increasing number of sports teams are making the decision to switch their natural grass playing fields to synthetic lawn turf. New artificial grass fields are miles ahead of the hard and dangerous turf fields from the 1970s and 1980s that felt like playing on concrete and could ruin careers. In most cases, traditional “carpets” have been replaced with plush and realistic artificial turf.
It’s not just professional and college teams that are switching old artificial turf with new turf. The overall reduction of artificial turf prices are making it more affordable than ever for high schools to make the change to artificial grass. That’s the case at West Milford High School in New Jersey, as the school moved in early November to replace the existing grass at its stadium with artificial turf.
The reasons the school is switching from grass to artificial turf are many. Grass fields cannot be used during cold, rain and other inclement weather situations. There is also upkeep costs involved with natural grass which can be eliminated with artificial turf. Factoring in the saving in maintenance and watering, artificial grass can cost far less than keeping up a natural grass field.
