While the financial and low-maintenance benefits of installing synthetic turf grass are widely known, there is still some concern over the health risks of using rubber infill. The State of New York Department of Health recently published a paper that can be viewed here, discussing potential health hazards of using artificial turf in sports centers. It sought to prove truths and dispel rumors for the public, so they can make an informed decision on whether installing an artificial grass lawn is right for them.
The study showed that surface temperatures on turf using a crumb-rubber infill can reach uncomfortable levels. While this may not be such an issue for residential installation, for fields intended for athletic use, this can lead to heat stress if not carefully monitored. Other sources indicate that fake turf grass can reach 30 to 50 degrees more in temperature than the surrounding air. Athletes should stay heavily hydrated and seek rest in shady areas if playing on artificial turf.
The study showed that there are no measurable differences between injury on fake grass and injury on artificial turf, suggesting that accidents that take place on artificial grass fields are not a result of the fiber quality. However, the study showed that those who play on fake grass run a higher risk of infection when injured with an open wound. Care for the injury, including first aid, can easily solve the problem of infection. Proper first aid should be used on any injury regardless of the type of covering used on an athletic field. The study did not find any occurrences of latex allergies resulting from contact with crumb rubber fields and it is determined that the rubber used does not expose the public to a health hazard.
