The use of outdoor artificial turf has gained popularity in the last decade. What was once a controversial product — the first synthetic turf products made in the 60s and 70s were hard and unsafe — has gone mainstream as major advancements in the field have led to high quality surfaces that look and feel just like natural grass.
So who’s embracing synthetic grass? Just about everyone. In 2011, more than 6,000 synthetic turf fields were being used in North America by high school and collegiate athletes, according to the Synthetic Turf Council. These athletes were playing and practicing football, soccer, hockey, baseball, and many other sports.
Beyond the playing field, thousands of homes throughout the nation have embraced synthetic lawns instead of natural grass. Homeowners use synthetic turf to create eco-friendly landscapes for lawns, pools, gardens, porches and outdoor living areas. In addition to beautifying homes, synthetic turf is being used to landscape areas where natural grass can’t grow or be effectively maintained, such as airport grounds, golf courses, highway mediums, pet parks, rooftops, playgrounds and even closed landfills. And that’s not all. Synthetic grass is even being used to landscape hotels and theme parks. From Disneyland to the Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Base, many places have embraced synthetic grass solutions. Perhaps it’s time you did, too.
